How Long Does It Take to Do a Loft Conversion?

Catherine Allen

Updated: 2 days ago

One of the most common questions we get at The Loft Build Company is: how long does it take to do a loft conversion? The answer depends on several factors including the type of loft conversion, the complexity of the design and planning or structural requirements.

To act as a guide, with Emmet and our experienced team leading the way we ensure a smooth and efficient process typically taking 8-12 weeks from start to finish. Let’s break down the key stages and timeframes involved.

Initial Consultation & Planning (2-4 Weeks)

Before any building work begins we conduct a thorough site visit to assess your property and discuss your needs. This is when we determine which loft conversion type is best suited for your home whether it’s a Velux, Dormer, Hip to Gable, Mansard or another style. (You can learn more about each loft type by visiting the appropriate page on our website. Start here with a dormer style).

If planning permission is required (which depends on the type of conversion and your local council regulations), we will submit applications at this stage. Permitted Development conversions can move ahead faster but for those requiring approval you should allow 6-8 weeks for a decision. More details on planning permission can be found on the Planning Portal.

Architectural Drawings & Structural Calculations (2-3 Weeks)

Once we have approval our architects and structural engineers create detailed drawings and calculations to ensure the loft conversion is structurally sound and meets Building Regulations. These plans are essential before any construction begins.

Construction Phase (6-10 Weeks)

With designs approved our expert team gets to work. Here’s an overview of what happens week by week:

  • Weeks 1-2: Structural work begins, including installing steel beams, floor reinforcements and roof alterations.

  • Weeks 3-5: External work such as dormer construction, roof windows (Velux or skylights) and insulation installation.

  • Weeks 6-8: Internal work including partition walls, electrics, plumbing and plastering.

  • Weeks 9-10: Final touches - decorating, flooring and installing fixtures like doors, staircases and skirting boards.

Throughout this process we ensure minimal disruption to your home. In most cases you can continue living in your house while we work as the bulk of construction happens externally before breaking through to the existing structure. Final Inspections & Sign-Off (1-2 Weeks)

Once the construction is complete a building inspector will visit to ensure all work complies with Building Regulations. We handle all certification ensuring everything is safe and legally compliant. Once approved, you’re ready to enjoy your brand-new loft space!
